The AMX-002 Gaza-B was a prototype transformable mobile suit developed by Axis Zeon as part of their transformable mobile suit development programme. It was developed from the AMX-001 Gaza-A construction mobile suit.

The “AMX” in the type code referred to it being an Axis Zeon mobile weapon. The code number “002” indicated it was the second mobile weapon design.

History

After the One Year War, Axis Zeon needed to develop new mobile suits to maintain military strength. The engineers used the Gaza-A construction mobile suit as the base to develop their first transformable mobile suit, the Gaza-B.

Although the Gaza-B never saw combat deployment, it served as a testbed for Axis Zeon’s transformable mobile suit technology. The data and parts from the Gaza-B development programme contributed to the creation of the AMX-003 Gaza-C.

Design

Axis Zeon based the Gaza-B on the Gaza-A construction mobile suit instead of a combat model. While this made it unsuitable for combat operations, the design allowed Axis engineers to test and refine transformable mobile suit technology.

The Gaza-B could transform into a mobile armor mode. This alternative configuration proved more effective for certain construction tasks, particularly when equipped with specialized equipment like lifting cranes or drilling backpacks.

Behind the scenes

Ushida Yuji was the original mechanical designer.

The Gaza-B shared its model number AMX-002 with the AMX-002 Neue Ziel. However, since the Neue Ziel appeared in the OVA Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory while the Gaza-B only appeared in the manga Double Fake: Under the Gundam, the model number is more commonly associated with the Neue Ziel.
