Luna Titanium alloy

Luna Titanium alloy was a specialized armor material developed by the Earth Federation Forces in UC 0064. It served as the foundation for later Gundarium alloy variants and was first used extensively in Project V mobile suits.

History

The Federation developed the first Luna Titanium alloy, designated LTX-001, in UC 0064. A later variant, LTX-128, gained prominence for its exceptional radiation-shielding properties, leading to its adoption in Minovsky reactor construction from UC 0047.

The material reached its peak development with the LTX-300 series, which was used in the Federation’s Project V mobile suits. The RX-78-2 Gundam, RX-77-2 Guncannon, and RX-75-4 Guntank all utilized this advanced armor material.

Military Applications

Luna Titanium found use beyond mobile suits. The Earth Federation Forces employed it in:

  • White Base-class assault carrier armor
  • RGM-79 GM shields
  • Strategic military installations

Even the Principality of Zeon recognized its value, incorporating Luna Titanium in specialized ammunition like the ZUX-197 shotgun shells used by their mobile suits.

Technical Information

Manufacturing

Luna Titanium required specialized production facilities and high-purity titanium ore. The highest quality deposits were found on Luna II, giving the material its name. The complex manufacturing process made mass production impractical, limiting its use to high-priority projects.

Properties

  • Exceptional durability against conventional weapons
  • Superior heat resistance
  • Effective radiation shielding
  • High strength-to-weight ratio
  • Complex workability requirements

Combat Performance

The One Year War demonstrated Luna Titanium’s effectiveness. The RX-78-2 Gundam notably withstood attacks from Zaku II machine guns with minimal damage, though beam weapons could still penetrate the armor.

Legacy

Luna Titanium established the foundation for future armor development. Its success led to research into more practical variants, eventually resulting in the various Gundarium alloy types used throughout the Universal Century.

Behind the scenes

The term “Luna Titanium” appeared in the original Mobile Suit Gundam series. It was later retroactively connected to Gundarium when director Tomino Yoshiyuki confirmed they were the same material.
