Code Geass
The Code Geass franchise started as an anime series released in October 2006. After its second season ended, the series grew into a larger franchise due to its wide critical acclaim. Several OVAs and a movie were released, and the series received manga and light novel adaptations.
The franchise appealed to a broad audience despite its mecha roots. It received praise from critics for its narrative, characters, strong voice acting, and success in hitting a wide range of audience groups. Most notable are the character conflicts portrayed and moral questions raised by the franchise.
Timeline
Main article: Code Geass timeline
Code Geass is set in the Imperial Calendar named Ascension Throne Britannia (a.t.b.). The calendar started from the day the united British tribes elected Celtic King Alwin I to battle Rome. Although the Europea United used the French Republican Calendar, the world deferred to the Imperial Calendar.
Mecha
Main article: Knightmare Frames
Knightmare Frames is the name for mecha in Code Geass. They are humanoid war machines developed by the Holy Britannian Empire. The name is a wordplay on nightmare and a knight’s mare. The former describes the terror the Knightmare Frames struck in the heart of the Empire’s enemies, while the latter is a praise for the pilots who defend the people. Pilots who proved themselves were knighted for their contributions..
