The AMS-120X Geara Doga Psycommu System Test Type was an experimental Newtype-use mobile suit developed by Char Aznable’s Neo Zeon movement. The Geara Doga Psycommu System Test Type was the earliest mobile suit developed by Char Aznable’s Neo Zeon for Newtype-use, serving as a testbed for technologies that would later be incorporated into more advanced units.

The “AMS” in the model code indicated it was manufactured by Anaheim Electronics, the “120” denoted the design series, and the “X” suffix identified it as an experimental variant.

History

Developed alongside the AMS-119S Geara Doga Custom, the AMS-120X utilised the same moveable frame as the standard mass production AMS-119 Geara Doga. The AMS-120X was equipped with a psycommu system to handle remote control of six funnel weapons.

The AMS-120X was also armed with a custom beam rifle with grenade launcher, a diffuse beam cannon and two beam sabers. Neo Zeon engineers were unable to miniaturise the psycommu system, which led to Anaheim Electronics being contracted to create a new design.

Anaheim used data from the AMS-120X to develop the MSN-03 Jagd Doga, which featured lower firepower but improved mobility. Data from the AMS-120X was also used to develop the beam shot rifle and diffuse mega particle cannon featured in Char’s personal mobile suit, the MSN-04 Sazabi.

Due to the failure to miniaturise the psycommu system, the task of developing Newtype-use MS was later passed over to Anaheim Electronics. Compared to the Jagd Doga, the Geara Doga Psycommu System Test Type had higher firepower but inferior mobility.

Design

The AMS-120X used the movable frame of the AMS-119 Geara Doga and was equipped with the psycommu system as well as remote weaponry known as ‘funnels’. The mobile suit retained the characteristic Zeon design elements including the monoeye sensor and angular armor configuration.

Because the size of the psycommu system could not be reduced sufficiently, the mobile suit required significant internal modifications to accommodate the equipment. This resulted in reduced internal space for other systems and affected the mobile suit’s overall performance balance.

The psycommu system allowed Newtype pilots to control the mobile suit’s remote weapons through mental commands, providing all-range attack capabilities that were essential for engaging multiple enemies simultaneously.

Armaments

Beam rifle

A custom beam rifle developed for the Geara Doga Psycommu System Test Type’s use, it had a grenade launcher at the bottom. The rifle featured enhanced targeting systems that interfaced with the mobile suit’s psycommu system for improved accuracy.

Anaheim Electronics later modified this rifle design into the MSN-04 Sazabi’s beam shot rifle, incorporating lessons learned from the test type’s operational data.

Grenade launcher

Integrated into the beam rifle, below the beam firing barrel, it holds five rounds. The launcher provided additional firepower for engaging hardened targets or groups of enemies at mid-range.

Diffuse beam cannon

A powerful waist-mounted beam weapon, it fires an unusually wide beam that can destroy multiple mobile suits in a single shot. This weapon system was later refined and incorporated into the Sazabi’s armament suite.

The wide beam spread made it particularly effective against formations of enemy mobile suits, though its high energy consumption limited its use to critical combat situations.

Beam sabers

Two beam sabers were stored in recharge racks behind the shoulders and hand-carried in use. These standard melee weapons used I-field technology to contain Minovsky particles within a blade configuration.

Funnels

Six funnels were stored on the shoulder armor shields. These remote weapons were equipped with built-in generators and controlled through the psycommu system. Guided by the psycommu system, these remote weapons were capable of conducting all range attacks from great distances without the need for guiding wires and without interference from Minovsky particles.

The funnels allowed the mobile suit to attack multiple opponents from multiple angles simultaneously, providing tactical advantages that would overwhelm most conventional mobile suits. However, the psycommu system’s limitations meant precise control required significant pilot skill and Newtype ability.

Optional equipment

The mobile suit could be equipped with an optional shield carried on the left forearm. Besides having defensive capabilities, this shield also had offensive capabilities in the form of four mega particle cannons and three INCOMs (Incom).

Three INCOMs could be mounted on the option shield. These wire-guided remote weapons functioned in conjunction with the psycommu system for all-range attacks. Although they were controlled by the psycommu system like the funnels, they lacked the range of the funnels and were used more as mid-to-short range weapons.

Due to issues with the Geara Doga Psycommu System Test Type’s psycommu system, it could not use the INCOMs and funnels simultaneously, requiring tactical decisions about which remote weapon system to deploy.

Known pilots

No specific pilots are recorded for the AMS-120X, as it remained primarily a test and development unit.

Behind the scenes

The AMS-120X Geara Doga Psycommu System Test Type was featured in the original design series Char’s Counterattack Mobile Suit Variations (CCA-MSV), representing Neo Zeon’s early attempts at developing Newtype-use mobile suits.
